Mykonos
We started our honeymoon in Mykonos. We decided on 4 nights in Mykonos, which was the perfect amount of time for us as our next stop was Santorini.
If you are planning on island hopping like we did, you have the option between traveling by ferry or plane. As we traveled at the end of the peak season in October, there weren’t as many ferry options. It also can get very windy that time of the year, which can cause last minute ferry cancellations and make for a bumpy ride (we heard some horror stories). Flying can be slightly more expensive and time consuming as you have to connect in Athens, but it is the most reliable way to travel.
We chose to take a ferry from Athens to Mykonos, which was quick and easy for us. I’d recommend booking in advance as the ferries will sell out, which is why we ended up flying from Mykonos to Santorini. We booked our ferry through the hotel as not all the websites translate into English.
Eats + Drinks
Of course, there is nothing like discovering new restaurants on your own as you explore a city for the first time. However, if you want to plan ahead, here were some of our dining highlights:
M - Eating - perfect dinner spot in Mykonos Town; make a reservation in advance
Souvlaki Story - casual, quick & delicious food right in town; we went twice
Avli tou Thodori - located in Platis Gialos beach with sunset views
Explore
Town Highlights (all within walking distance of each other)
Mykonos Town - the windy white streets you see in postcards complete with restaurants, shopping and more
The Windmills – not much to explore, but worth the quick walk for the photo opp
Little Venice – restaurant row along the water, sunset views included
Beaches
Known for its beaches, there are so many to explore. We checked out Ornos Beach, Psarou Beach & Paranga Beach. All were beautiful, but very similar.
On the map, it looks like the beaches are close together. However, it isn’t possible to walk from one beach to another. There are water taxis in the peak summer months you can take or you can travel by bus/taxi.
Stay
Like all of Greece, there were so many breathtaking hotels in Mykonos, we found it difficult to choose where to stay. You have the option of staying in/near Mykonos town or along the beaches. As we had a pool at our hotel and wanted to head into town everyday, we opted to stay walking distance from Mykonos town. This was ideal for the vacation we wanted, but still left us about a 20 minute bus ride away from the beaches.
When booking your hotel, there are many options to get private pools with your room. Be careful to check and make sure that the pool is heated if you are planning on splurging for a private one! And speaking of water…don’t drink from the tap!
We ended up staying at the Bill & Coo Suites and could not recommend it more.
