Lagos

Lagos Logistics

Lagos is one of the beach towns in Portugal’s southern Algarve region. The area is a hot spot for tourists with its stunning cliffs and beaches lining the coast drawing in visitors during the summer months.

It is a little difficult to get to this region, but if you have the time it is worth the trip. We traveled to Lagos via train from Lisbon. The ride is about 4 hours long and you do have to switch trains (although the switch is very straightforward). I highly recommend buying tickets in advance.

Leaving Lagos, we flew out of Faro Airport. Unfortunately, this airport is an hour away from Lagos with no real easy way to get there expect for by car. We ended up just booking a private shuttle through the hotel.

Stay

We spent 3 nights at Lagos Avenida Hotel and could not have had a better stay. This newer, boutique hotel is a short walk from the train station and Lagos town. We spent most of our afternoons lounging on the rooftop which has an infinity pool and bar. The hotel also has one of the top restaurants in town and offers complimentary breakfast each morning.

Eats

Coming from Lisbon and all of its many delicious restaurants, we were not expecting much from this small beach town. However, we were blown away by some of the restaurants in the town and they were some of our favorite dining experiences in Portugal:

Ol’ Bastards – this small fish & chips restaurant is run by a bunch of chill surfer guys. Everything there is fried and the cocktail menu is amazing.

The Green Room – Mexican place with tacos and unbelievable nachos. Typically really busy, but well worth the wait. Cash only.

Casa Do Prego – so good we went twice. Serves local Portuguese dishes with a modern vibe and has some outside seating. You can try to make a reservation in advance, if not, they have a rooftop reserved for drinks if there is a wait.

MAR - one of the few restaurant options outside of the main town and along the coast. Delicious seafood with even better views.

Explore

  • Beaches - the beaches are a good 20 minute walk from town, so taking an uber is a popular option. There are a bunch of beaches to explore and you can hike between them all (although it isn’t the easiest hike). Our personal favorite was Praia da Dona Ana beach. Although the beaches are stunning thanks to all the rock formations and limestone cliffs, there are no real beach clubs. There aren’t many options to rent chairs and hardly any restaurants/bars. Plan ahead and bring your own water and snacks.

  • Ponta Da Piedade - one of the main attractions in Lagos is this area along the coast full of picture perfect cliffs and rock formations. Too rocky for any beaches, you can explore Ponta Da Piedade on foot or take a boat cruise for a different view.

  • Lagos Town - small and charming, this is where all the restaurants and shops are. The streets are lined with lots of outdoor cafes and live music, but no main attractions to check out.
